Patrick PhillipsParticipant
Thanks to Steve and Mike for enabling us to get the EVB up and running!
Excellent to have this little beauty dishing data to my AEP! Now to Stringify it and push it to a dashboard!
Consider this ‘ticket’ closed.
And, I’m happy to write up our experiences, should others like to know.
PatrickNovember 11, 2015 at 10:18 am in reply to: AEP-Specific Configuration Support for 85 sq. Miles #9897Patrick PhillipsParticipantBrandon,
My interest is to have all gateways “private” but to send open sensor data as MQTT to TTN.
Thanks for offering to setting me up with the Sales Engineers. I hope to have a focused conversation with them this week.
Keys for us right now:
- Get our new mDot-EVB configured and joined.
- Establish data I/O through NodeRED (create a flow)
- Send MQTT data to (at least) Thingstud.io and/or Opensensors.io
As, this “template” will be on public display next Wednesday and Thursday — with me at the helm. Lots to do before I sleep…
Thanks again,
PatrickPatrick PhillipsParticipantThank you!
Patrick PhillipsParticipantFor other’s benefit troubleshooting similar, non-responsive USB-Serial issues, it was also suggested I might ‘jump’ pins 2 and 3 on the male end of the serial cable (#1 is top left.)
Try to do a basic loopback on the cable itself. Just connect pins 2 & 3 on the male DE-9 end of the cable. Pin 1 is the upper-left pin as you look at the male DE-9 end of the cable.
Maybe it’ll help somebody.
Patrick PhillipsParticipantBrandon,
Thanks. I did create a support case on the 4th of Nov.

Haven’t received a reply as yet.
Thank you again for your attention and help!

Patrick PhillipsParticipantBrandon,
Yes, that’s the one. Once the firmware is up-to-date Does the light ‘go green’? Or, is the Stat Com light always initially red (as in my case.)
Is there a set-up you know to work for getting AT commands from a Mac into the UDK?
Lastly, I will be receiving a EVB tomorrow. It the process for joining the EVB mDot a different in any way? Want to try to be ahead on this…
Patrick
Patrick PhillipsParticipantHi Brendan,
Thanks. Yes, I’m hip to that. These two things may be help you orient you to my issue:Serial Cable
Have purchased and connected two different (USB to Serial) cables to the DB9 – still haven’t been able to get my AT commands into the mDot UDK. (Tried Terminal, minicom and CoolTerm too.) Tried two different UDKs.I’m on a mac if that makes a difference to you.
mDot Firmware
As for the device recognizing the commands, I also do not know if I have been able to flash the mDot firmware. When I copy the latest into the MultiTech directory, the UDK blinks then the ‘drive’ remounts. Is this ‘normal’ behavior? Thanks.
PatrickPatrick PhillipsParticipantThanks!
Alas, minicom to the /dev/tty.usbmodem3a23 port freezes too. (no print to screen/typing commands or OK.)
How do I send AT+LOG=6 to the usb port to in order debug?
(Seems my cable/USB port may be shot. At least it’s consistent on Terminal/minicom/CoolTerm … learning the hard way.)
Thanks a lot for your help.
Patrick PhillipsParticipantBrandon, Thanks.
I posted your comment on the TTN site and Johan responded this way:
Thanks for posting. I see a huge value in using Node RED, not really on the gateway but in the cloud instead, after the routing, deduplication and decryption by open source TTN components.
If you do want to use Node RED on the gateway for other (local area network) purposes, you could indeed forward the raw LoRa packets using MQTT to a TTN router. That is indeed possible as we are offering a MQTT broker too.
Thanks,
Patrick
Patrick PhillipsParticipantBrandon, in our installation we would like to process packets with Node-RED, and yes, to forward important events. When you say “doable but a significantly larger problem” do you mean by comparison to “really easy?”
What steps would TTN and we (with your help) go through to configure our network server with the TTNs settings? If this option is reasonably feasible it would be good to test it.
Lastly, can we process MQTT through Node-RED to TTN (or anything for that matter) without matching server settings?
Thanks — Patrick
Patrick PhillipsParticipantThanks, Brandon. Helps a lot.
Andrew, that was going to be one of my questions — can we sent an MQTT through NodeRED to TTN?
And, Brandon, my original question stems from your observation:
You’ll have to handle the LoRa packets using a TTN application handler (which I believe they have Node-RED for this or have plans to have it).
My great hope is to use NodeRED to point packets through a TTN application handler, as Johan and you mention.
Before Johan’s most recent conversation with MultiTech, Lawrence Griffith mentioned:
The work MT is doing is on integrating multiple AEP to form a wide area private network, and that’s probably going to be MQTT based.
We will purchase multiple AEPs. Security will be important. A hybrid private/public network may help us. Perhaps we should use MQTT. (We’ll use it for other purposes.)
Do you know what other information can I gather on defining the NodeRED TTN Node and/or MQTT and where might I get it?
I just want to make sure, before I even unpack the conduit we have. (Avoiding headaches is better than rushing at a wall . . .)
Thanks a ton,
