Hi
I have a mtsmc-e1 embedded modem with AT&T sim card.
I have configured the APN with AT+CGDCONT
When I try the AT+CSQ. It gives 99,99
AT+CREG gives CME ERROR: unknown.
Once the APN is configured, the modem should automatically register to the network, correct?
ATT confirmed that there is 2G cell coverage at this location.
Am I missing some other configuration setting here?
Thanks
Luccas
Hi Lucas,
It may be normal for +CSQ to return 99,99 if the modem hasn’t registered yet. If the modem has a good SIM and antenna and cellular service is available, it should register without sending any AT commands (APN doesn’t need to be set).
Here are a couple of suggestions to resolve the ERROR response to +CREG:
The correct syntax for the +CREG query command is AT+CREG?
Issue the AT+CPIN? command to make sure the SIM is correctly installed.
If one of these suggestions don’t take care of the +CREG ERROR response, you may want to open a support ticket here:

Thanks for the response.
AT+CREG? gives 0, 0 which is not registered.
AT+CPIN? says ready.
Is the modem ready to use out of the box after apn is configure or should an external antenna be attached? The modem comes with a wire connecting at the antenna connector. In this state, I get 99,99 for CSQ. I tried removing the wire and connecting an external antenna at the jack next to the SIM card. I get 11, 99 for CSQ but CREG still gives 0, 0.
Thanks
Lucas
The antenna wire was connected in the wrong place. The modem has registered.
