The Social Side of M2M Communications

February 9th, 2012

By Terra Bastolich, CPMR, M2M Sales Manager

In my travels over the last few weeks attending the M2M Evolution event in Miami and meeting with potential partners, application software companies and end users, I have had the privilege of meeting some outstanding M2M professionals. I learned from them ways to more simply describe M2M (which can be quite complex) and how to better explain this rapidly growing concept to audiences in all markets.

This new perspective on M2M is exciting for me because I am always challenging myself to break it down for people as well as present it in a way to which people can relate.  So what is this new way to explain M2M – or machine-to-machine communications?  Think of it in terms of social media. Everyone is connected in at least one of the major communities, whether it is LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter, Skype or a combination of these and more. So people easily understand this concept. M2M is essentially making machines social, by putting them on networks and allowing them to communicate or “socialize” within those networks. Simply put, devices can communicate with other devices, with you and even customers!

M2M is enabling companies to deploy products into the market that enhance the customer experience and create an easier way to conduct business, most often saving considerable costs along the way.  Let’s say you own a fleet of construction machines (a forklift, some generators, a boom truck, etc.).  Consider connecting all your equipment so they can “socialize.” Equip them with cellular and GPS connectivity, all reporting back to a simple application you manage from your iPhone, iPad or other handheld device – no matter where you are on the globe in relation to your machinery.   Now you have access to real time data about your network. Where are my machines (GPS)?  How many are currently in use?  How many hours until maintenance is due?   Why is that machine unnecessarily running?  Click here to power it off. Done.  Simple. That’s M2M!

Get ready to socialize with more than just classmates, old friends and colleagues. M2M is bringing devices to the party and it’s going to get very interesting!

Getting personal with M2M

February 2nd, 2012

By Rosey Vieira, Key Account Manager
Are you prepared for a world of smart machines and devices? Most of us think we are because we sure know the benefits at a personal level. The goal of the Arrow Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Seminar Series is to help attendees position their company on the cutting edge in this arena. I am excited to be presenting in Seattle at this stop of the series and talk to companies about how they can quickly bring their M2M solution to market and beat the competition. In my 12 years working in the field of data and voice communications, I’ve seen the fastest technology changes in M2M in terms how we communicate, play and do business every day. I think how important my Blackberry is to me and how I depend on it for business. It’s so much easier for me to drive to a new location using a GPS device. I also am able to communicate (real time voice and data) with people across the globe through Skype and Messenger. Perhaps most importantly, because of M2M my four year old can download his favorite Mickey Mouse videos on a tablet.  We live in an M2M world and it’s only helping us communicate and do business is a more efficient and faster way.  It’s an industry that is growing rapidly and I am excited to be part of this ever changing exciting technology and help companies realize the benefits of M2M in the quickest possible way.

The Painless Answer to Connectivity when a Network Cable Isn’t Available

February 1st, 2012

By Cindy Kerr, Senior Strategic Account Manager
Are you looking to enable communications for an application deployed in an area with no available network cable?  Our Value Added Resellers often encounter situations when it’s too expensive to justify cabling for simple applications like remote monitoring using a security web cam.

The Multi-Tech 3G MultiModem® rCell intelligent router is an ideal solution for hard to cable areas.  It has a built in cellular modem, so no hard-wired lines are required, just a cellular plan. Yes, this is one of the premier products we sell at Multi-Tech, but I speak from personal experience as well.

One of the benefits of working at a company that designs this type of technology is the ability to beta test products.  When our MultiModem rCell first became available, one of our executives volunteered to beta test it.  On his own, he hooked it up at home and finally discovered what his cats did while he was at work all day.  I also participated in a beta test of the MultiModem rCell, however I limited my testing to work.  I’m not sure that my husband or the babysitter would have appreciated the ability for me to remotely monitor them 24 hours a day.  It was great to be able to control the cameras remotely and it was extremely easy to hook up.  I could zoom in/out and move them all around to have visibility to anything I needed to monitor – and also worth noting, is that I was up in running in a matter of minutes.

Our MultiModem® rCell comes in both our usual industrial grade chassis as well as a new, lower cost plastic chassis.  Come check them out at the ITExpo East show which starts today at the Miami Convention Center. We’re in Booth #223 – located in the M2M Pavilion.

What’s Exciting about the Arrow Electronics M2M Seminar Series

January 19th, 2012

By Duane Wald, Director of Sales

As I prepared for the upcoming Arrow Electronics M2M Seminar Series, I reflected on how far we and the industry have progressed through the years.  Multi-Tech launched its first M2M cellular modem in 2003 in anticipation of the next frontier of connectivity.  At the time, we had a little over 30 years of data communications experience under our belt. We set out to educate customers, collaborate with partners, and innovate to deliver real benefits to the market.  Adoption was slow as customers tiptoed (and some leaped, i.e., Amazon Kindle) into the world of M2M.  I anticipate that participating in a similar road show these days will be an entirely different experience than my first go-around.  Way back in 2004, education was our central theme and conversations were focused on the history and evolution of wireless, industry jargon, the emergence of MVNOs and carrier data plans, the justification of selecting cellular modems vs. analog modems and, of course, M2M technology certification schemes.

Fast forward to 2012 and I’m elated that today’s road show embodies the years of effort and commitment of organizations and people who are creating a wireless world and all the benefits that come with machine-to-machine communications.  The industry is maturing and so many opportunities lie ahead for all of us.

The Arrow event is an ideal place to discover some of these opportunities. I am presenting with Wyless at the first session today in San Jose. It will be great to connect with others in the M2M field and to be able to help customers align their needs with the best M2M solution to gain a competitive advantage.

Multi-Tech Systems sees steady hiring and greater demand

“Even in these tough economic times, many of the segments we target are thriving,” says Jim Cairns, vice president of marketing at Multi-Tech Systems. “We provide technology that allows for greater efficiency and cost savings, and that’s always welcomed.”

Founded by Raghu Sharma, Multi-Tech has been producing connectivity technology for nearly 40 years. Part of the company’s strength lies in its diversity: products range from smart grids that can monitor a house’s electricity, to sensors that allow remote ATM machines to communicate with bank systems quickly, to patient-monitoring systems that make home health care easier and safer.

Health care is a major part of Multi-Tech’s offerings, and the company has major clients like Medtronic and Boston Scientific. Cairns says, “The cost for health care these days is almost obscene. So, if we can allow people to manage their health care from their homes instead of rushing to the hospital, that makes for major savings.”

Growth in all areas is creating a demand for new talent, he adds, and hiring has been steady at the company’s headquarters in Mounds View. Recent hires have joined teams in sales, engineering, and manufacturing.

A unique part of Multi-Tech’s operations is its in-house manufacturing facilities. By not outsourcing any production to overseas entities, the company doesn’t benefit from cost breaks, Cairns notes, but there’s greater control over the supply chain and more adaptability to customer needs.

For the future, Multi-Tech intends to keep hiring at a steady pace and expand into new markets. “We feel fortunate to be growing, while still striving to provide the best solutions for our customers,” says Cairns.
